Learners are told Japanese is "the fastest language in the
world" — but nobody tells you that a cooking channel and a news desk are not
speaking at the same speed. We measured it, channel by channel.

Key findings
Across 364 Japanese YouTube channels
(6,133 videos, 2,511 hours of timed
speech), the median channel speaks at 332 characters per
minute.
Technology is the fastest genre we can measure
(median 403 cpm); Music is the slowest
(median 199 cpm) — a 2.0× gap between genre medians.
The gap between individual channels is wider still: the fastest measured channel
speaks 7.0× faster than the slowest
(561 vs 80 cpm).
Genre only half-decides speed: within a typical genre, the middle half of channels
alone spans ~90 cpm — individual channels matter more than labels.
Linguists have famously clocked Japanese near the top of the syllable-rate
charts — the oft-cited cross-language studies put conversational Japanese around
7–8 syllables per second, faster than almost anything else measured. That number
travels well on social media and terribly in practice, because no learner immerses
in "Japanese." You immerse in somebody: a gamer narrating a boss fight,
a news anchor reading a bulletin, a woodworker murmuring over a chisel. The gap
between those speakers is the number that decides whether you can follow along —
and it's a number nobody had published for Japanese YouTube. So we measured our
own catalog.
Every channel in the OK-Mine directory carries timing data: the captions of each
analyzed video tell us how many characters were spoken across how many seconds of
actual speech. That gives every video an honest characters-per-minute rate — the
same measurement behind the "Speed" meter on our channel pages — and every channel
the median of its videos. Here is how the genres compare:

Two things usually surprise people in this chart. First, the spread within
a genre: picking "an easy genre" still leaves a wide gap between its calmest and
most caffeinated channels, which is why OK-Mine rates every channel individually
instead of trusting genre labels. Second, how much the genre medians disagree —
the difference between the fast end and the slow end of this chart is not a
nuance, it's the difference between following along and drowning.
For a learner the practical reading is simple: speed is a difficulty
axis you can choose. If native speech feels like a wall, the fix is
usually not "more vocabulary" — it's the same vocabulary at 30% fewer characters
per minute. Find a channel you like at the slow end of a genre, build up, then
climb. That's exactly what the directory's Speed meter (and the difficulty
breakdown on every channel page) is for.

Methodology
As of 2026-07-10 the OK-Mine catalog held
375 Japanese YouTube channels and 6,260
analyzed videos (9,342,258 words). A video enters this analysis with
at least 60 seconds of timed speech and a sane rate (60–1,200 cpm); a channel needs
5 such videos and is scored by its median video; a genre is shown with at
least 5 scored channels. That leaves 364
channels / 6,133 videos / 2,511
hours of timed speech. Channel medians (not pooled videos) feed the genre stats,
so one prolific channel can't tilt its genre. Rate = caption characters ÷ caption-span
seconds, per video.
Caveats, honestly stated: transcripts are mostly YouTube's automatic (ASR)
captions, whose timing tracks speech onset well but can merge pauses into
spans; rates are computed only over timed speech, so long silences,
music, and B-roll don't dilute them, but rapid caption text can slightly
overstate very fast speakers. Characters-per-minute is not syllables-per-second
— kanji compress syllables — so compare these numbers to each other, not to the
academic literature. The corpus is what learners actually mine on OK-Mine, not
a random sample of YouTube.
The measurement is the same one that powers the
directory's per-channel Speed meter. The compute
script is versioned with the site; the numbers above are refreshed by re-running
it as the catalog grows.
